The Lakewood Jazz Ensemble

This is one of the premier big bands on the east coast. Comprised of 20 professional musicians from NY, NJ, MD, and Pa. They have performed and recorded with jazz artists Maynard Ferguson, Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, Louis Bellson, David Garibaldi, Phil Woods, Al Cohn, Lew Tabackin, Urbie Green, Bill Watrous, Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval, Allen Vizutti , Bobby Shew, Byron Stripling, Lew Soloff, Tal Farlow, Mike Smith, Kenny Davern, Bob Mintzer, Claudio Roditi and Red Rodney.

21st Annual Music Spectacular Jazz Festival March 26 2008

0ver 1,000 elementary, middle and high school students from New Jersey and Pennsylvania converged on the Strand Theater for a music assembly about jazz with a world famous jazz artist and the Lakewood Jazz Ensemble. The students will be guests of the Lakewood Jazz Ensemble for the annual 11 hour Music Spectacular Jazz Festival. Previous performances have featured Maynard Ferguson, Dizzy Gillespie, Lew Soloff, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Phil Woods, Louis Bellson, Arturo Sandoval, Byron Stripling, Allen Vizzutti, David Garibaldi, Bill Watrous, Bobby Shew, Steve Turre and Butch Miles, Bob Mintzer, Claudio Roditi and Dave Weckl. Students were bussed from tri-state high schools representing an audience that filled every seat in the Strand Theater.

The Lakewood Jazz Ensemble is a community arts program sponsored by the Township of Lakewood. Comprised of twenty outstanding musicians, the band rehearses and performs regularly under the expert direction of Director, Wilbur Wittemann. Following a 10:30 a.m. performance, high school jazz bands from area schools performed for clinics and adjudication. All Stars student musicians selected from each of the bands performed three selections as the opening act at the 7:30 p.m. show.
